What is Rattan Garden Furniture

By searching tables or chairs for outdoor use, I wondered What is rattan garden furniture?

Actually, I’m a little confused about the use of the term Rattan in garden furniture production and trading.

Even more for me as English is not a mother’s tongue a term Wicker Furniture sounds a bit confusing.

No secret that many traders who display on labels or on ads that the material is Wicker or Rattan but very often it is not so correct.

What do I mean? In short.

Rattan is a close relative of the palm tree. It is a type of a vine that rapidly grows in the jungles of Southeast Asia and Northern Australia.

Wicker is not material it is but a method of weaving.

PE Rattan is a synthetic material and looks like natural rattan.

I believe that most of the furniture which is labeled as Rattan Garden Furniture, even in Amazon online store, is made of PE rattan material.

Wicker furniture all are made by hand weaved and is very durable. PE rattan and other synthetic wicker today is the bestseller as much of it is manufactured in South East Asia where traditional weaving expertise still alive.

Even more, synthetic wicker materials like PE rattan and others give the same appearance as natural rattan fibers, but they have the longer lifetime for outside use.

Well, but our topic is about Rattan Garden Furniture. So, I slightly change a search term to Natural Rattan Garden Furniture.

When searching in my favorite Amazon.com not so many results are pop up. Actually, you can find a genuine rattan furniture piece by looking at a higher price tag. As a rule, they are made in Indonesia and is top quality products. Some customer’s claims could be found only in the quality of cushions and pillows.

Is a natural rattan garden furniture so popular? I guess that not as popular as PE rattan wicker garden furniture sets. I hardly found any customer review in Amazon.com, and it shows the low rate of purchases.

When we change back search keywords to Rattan Garden Furniture Sets the results are much more pleasant. Prices are more affordable, and a variety of products are wider.

My conclusion about Rattan Garden Furniture is that if you want to feel the sense of steamy forests of Indonesia or Philippines and only natural material adherent then buy it. You will enjoy the feeling of 50-ies and 60-ies.

Today is fashionable to buy some furniture imported from the British colony in the 19th century and 20th century. Mainly it is small decorative side chairs and occasional tables to hold jewelry boxes or flower vase.

However, a natural rattan is vulnerable to heavy weather conditions, especially low temperatures, frost, and rain. The great demand and popularity of rattan wicker garden furniture forced to look manufacturers for new material and they found that synthetic fibers or polyethylene became the best alternative.

PE rattan wicker garden furniture could be left outside whole year along, and only you need then when the snow has melted rinse them and put cushions.

So, do not blame sellers when you found that your recently purchased rattan garden furniture set is made of PE rattan wicker material. PE rattan wicker chairs and sofas are durable, and prices are more friendly than natural rattan furniture. Only from the proper choice is depending on how long and how pleasant your garden furniture will serve you.

Just one five stars verified purchase customer review from Amazon.com

„This set is a great value for the price! I enjoy building things, so putting this together was no problem. (Though I should’ve paid better attention to the instructions and saved some time) It looks great and is still holding up well after regular use. My space is covered, but if it was open to the elements, I’d probably not leave the cushions out. All in all, a great set.“

    Hi Andrejs,
I like the way you describe and break down all of the different aspects of both natural Rattan and PE Rattan furniture. So, I live in a country where the winter is long, and from what you describe, PE rattan (or synthetic Rattan) can withstand the harsh conditions of winter. That is great! I will definitely look it up for my next outdoor furniture purchase.

    • admin says:

Hi, Denis and thanks for stopping by.

Actually, I also live in long winter and drizzly autumn region. Therefore, I will have to look for PE rattan garden furniture sets. Unfortunately, the prices in our shops are much higher than in Amazon online store.

I still searching the best for my needs.

  • jeffrey16201 says:

This garden furniture really sounds impressive, you can leave it out all winter even in places where it become very cold with snow. That alone is impressing, my garden furniture I must take in every fall, if not it will not be worth much next spring.

I have often wondered what is the difference between garden furniture and patio furniture?

    • admin says:

      Thanks Jeffrey for comment.

Actually, my understanding is that no any difference between garden and patio furniture sets. Even in Wiki is defined that:

Garden furniture, also called patio furniture or outdoor furniture, is a type of furniture specifically designed for outdoor use. It is typically made of weather-resistant materials such as aluminium which does not rust. The oldest surviving examples of garden furniture were found in the gardens of Pompeii.

I think just in warmer climate countries a patio is a popular outdoor place to have dinner or just to relax.

    Hey Andrejs:

Thanks for your page on rattan garden furniture. It has exactly pinpointed the problem I’m having finding natural rattan furniture!

Yes, I know the PE rattan is more durable and less expensive and so on. The styles are lovely and all, but I do have a preference for the more natural stuff.

Guess I’m just going to have to keep haunting estate sales. (Sigh!)

    • admin says:

      Thanks, Netta for stopping by.

You are right that natural rattan garden furniture is NATURAL and real feelings you can not fool. Brand new sets are pricey, but my neighbor had found a flea market two great second-hand chairs for under fifty buck each just needs a little mending.

Need to spend some time and drive around or search online and I hope that it is possible to find natural rattan garden furniture for the affordable money.

Hey there! This was an interesting article. I have never heard of a Rattan Garden either. Its so interesting how plants can be so similar but so different. I grew up on an island with plenty of palm trees but still never knew about Rattan. I really like that Rattan wicker chair. I’m going to be buying a house soon and think it will be a nice addition to my porch space.

    Thanks for sharing!

    • admin says:

Thank you for your comment! Rattan wicker garden furniture is a great choice. It is long lasting garden furniture set which can be sold for good money after it gets tired.

  • Chris says:

Well from your coverage here, natural Rattan and PE Rattan furniture certainly looks the part and would grace and improve the look of any garden…but I am wondering what countries it would be best suited to?

I live in South Wales, UK, and we get A LOT of rain and snow in the winter time – would this sort of furniture need to be taken inside every night to protect it from the elements?

    • admin says:

Hi Chris and thanks for comennt.

Modern, synthetic rattan garden furniture is made from durable plastic which isn’t affected by sun, rain or high temperatures.  It’s UV resistant and weatherproof, making it low maintenance furniture for your garden.

  • glenda says:

    Hi Andrejs,

The timing of your article couldn’t be better! I’m planning on purchasing some furniture for my garden and luckily I stumbled across your great informative article on garden furniture and well, I have to admit that I became curious with this Rattan Furniture and after reading your article, It help me came up with a decision that this rattan garden furniture is what I’ll be investing on.

    • admin says:

Thanks, Glenda for stopping by. It’s the right time to look for a discount for rattan garden furniture. Next spring prices will go up, and during the Black Friday sales, you can save a lot.

  • David says:

I understand that Rattan garden furniture is not naturally waterproof and that it is possible to make it waterproof by applying a number of coats of marine varnish directly. Does this mean that the furniture itself is waterproof when you buy it or do you have to apply the coats of marine varnish directly yourself?

    • admin says:

You are right David. A natural rattan can be weatherproofed to a limited degree. To better protect natural rattan garden furniture give it two or better three coats of yacht varnish. PE rattan wicker garden furniture can be left outdoors all year round.

  • Taylor says:

It’s good to know that the rattan wicker furniture is not typically natural. This doesn’t surprise me because, as you said, natural rattan does not hold up well in intense whether. This makes it less ideal for a large portion of people.

I’m not particularly bothered by the synthetic material. In my experience, it has been very high-quality and has lasted several seasons.

  • Emma says:

Hi Andrejs, This article made me remember the conservatory furniture we had when I was growing up.  It was so comfortable and looked so nice and  always smelled so nice. I’m pretty sure it must have been the genuine rattan. I am seriously thinking of replacing our garden furniture now after reading your article but as I live in the UK I think I will probably have to go with the PE Rattan.

    Thanks Emma

    • admin says:

Hi Emma, like you I know how the natural rattan smells and it is sweet childhood memories. My grandma had two chairs and cushion from natural rattan, but she almost never left them outside for long, even in a warm Summer afternoon. My grandfather was deep sea sailor like me before, and he brought them from overseas.

  • Veronica says:

I really enjoyed reading your post. I didn´t even know about artificial Rattan furniture. I leave in Venezuela, which is a warm country so, we mostly use natural Rattan furniture which can be found in some towns where people make them.

My parents have natural Rattan furniture for their beach appartment so, in Venezuela it´s not only used for outdoors. It´s also used for indoors a lot. It gives the appartment a fresh and nice look.

When natural Rattan Furniture is used for indoors, it lasts a lot if it is properly taken care of. My parents´ furniture must be more than 30 years old and still look nice.

    • admin says:

I agree with you, Veronica. The natural rattan gives you warmth and perfect feeling. In such a country like Venezuela, I would choose a natural material as well, and prices at local producers are much lower as in the US or Europe retail shops.

  • Calvin says:

    Hello Andrejs,

Before reading your page I had no knowledge or experience with Rattan garden furniture.  We have a couple of pieces of cheap “wicker” appearing furniture on our partio and only metal chairs and tables in our pool area.  From reading your information I learned that rattan wicker graden furniture with “PE” in the title will be best suited for cold winter weather and steamy humid weather in the summer time.  It is also apparent that the “PE” title will allow customers looking for rattan garden furniture to purchase the product at a cheaper price. You are showing viewers of your site a more durable rattan product for less money while explaining the details in a thorough manner.

    • admin says:

You are right that PE resin is synthetic material I can withstand almost any weather conditions. From the other hand furniture made from natural rattan of tropical palms reflect a sense of warmth. So sometimes is difficult to choose.

  • Shy says:

A lot of good information here.  I would definitly be interested in the PE rattan wicker garden furniture due to the fact that it can be left outside all year.  I don’t want to have to worry about my furniture being outside if it were to rain or get covered in snow in the winter.  Would not want to go out there and have to bring it in cause it was getting all wet.  It is nice that you can just leave it out and not worry at all that it will ruin your furniture.

    • admin says:

Rattan garden sets or pats as chairs, sofas, and tables each separately are a smart investment. Even after five years you can sell it and choose other design.

  • William says:

    Great article, Andrejs

    Plenty of useful information here.

One thing in particular, is that Rattan is winter weather proof. This is very useful to me as i live in an area where snow is not uncommon, so with the upcoming holidays i’ll definitely have to consider Rattan furniture for my next addition to my porch.

    All the best,

     – William

    • admin says:

It is better not to leave the natural rattan in the winter period. If the furniture is from PE rattan wicker, then nothing will ever happen during the winter. However, if there are places to store, it is better to do so by winter. If honestly, sometimes I’d like to sit on a comfortable chair on the snowy terrace in the winter myself.

  • Tim Bennett says:

I am originally from England, but I have lived in The Philippines for over 20 years.

    We are surrounded by Rattan.

    It’s beautiful!

But you taught me more about rattan in your article than the whole of the last 20 years!

I had no idea between Rattan and Wicker.

    Now I know!

You are spot on when you say that Rattan is affected by bad weather.

We have property in Palawan, right by the sea and our rattan can last a long time.

If it get’s damaged, then it’s cheap to replace (In Philippines it is) so we can just swap it out!

    Nice to read your article.

    • admin says:

It is great to read about the real user experience about rattan garden furniture.

As far as I can see, your property is on the coast of the sea, where there is a lot of moisture.

How long has your rattan patio furniture set been used and are they out all year?

  • Celeste says:

I have never heard of Rattan garden furniture before but it sounds and looks lovely. I really like how you explained the differences between natural and PE, it was very useful to someone who doesn’t know much about the topic. The next time I go garden shopping I will definitely be looking at Rattan furniture because of its durability and now I know where to look so thank you 🙂

  • Tarun says:

    Hi Andrejs,

I never have heard of Rattan either until I came across your website. I have been looking for some good garden furniture but I always thought that bamboo was the best option.

Looks like I was wrong 🙂

How does 1 keep it maintained? Do we have to rub some kind of oil on it? can we wash it with soap?

Look forward to hearing your answers

    • admin says:

Thanks for stopping by. The natural rattan garden furniture better not to be left out in winter or rain. PE or synthetic rattan furniture, you can. The only color can fade.

  • victor lavaza says:

Thanks to you, now I know what Rattan garden furniture really is. My wife and I will be re-decorating our garden in just under a fortnight to have it ready and sparkling in time for Christmas festivities. I will be checking out on the Amazon leads you’ve shared in your post.

    Best regards

    • admin says:

Thanks for visiting my page. It’s a smart idea to look for garden furniture in the winter. On Christmas, you can find discounts never seen before.

  • Doc says:

I did not know what Rattan furniture was so color me learned after reading you informative article. I did already know about wicker which i do love a nice outdoor wicker rocking chair. I can see where the comfort mostly comes from how comfortable your pillows are.

Philippines is a wonderful place to be I was there this past year and if i ever move there i will be buying some Rattan furniture to put outside.

  • mark kabakov says:

Admin, hello! My family also discussed this topic, when we were going to buy patio furniture. There was a great temptation to buy an exotic table, 2 chairs and 6 chairs woven from rattan (flexible Indonesian creepers). It would be a wonderful natural furniture. And it would serve for a long time in our critical conditions.

But we chose the cheaper option and bought synthetic wicker furniture. For two seasons, our purchase has faded under the influence of the sun, wind and dust. We will change synthetics for natural this time.

Thank you for your topic. Mark

    • admin says:

Hello Mark. Thank you for participating in the experience of using synthetic rattan patio furniture. You’re right that it fades under the influence of sun and humidity. The natural rattan just like wooden furniture creates a sense of warmth, but the price is often too high to afford to buy it.
